Wife’s nephews (cousins to son and his family). Also might note that one nephew provided the very expensive–and time intensive–catfish for one menu! I think a good time was had by all thanks to the cooperative weather.

Well, thanks for the advice–but really what can anyone do except endure the roller coaster ride? We are at the mercy of mighty forces. We always are, but sometimes the roller coaster is going up and then it seems like a good ride with a great view!

In a similar vein–I was the secretary for our church women’s group for the past three years. I kept the minutes diligently for all of our meetings and stored them in the historical file that goes back to the early 1900’s when the group started. We disbanded in December. What was the point of all those minutes? What would be the point of…[Read more]

This is a great glimpse into the life of a bygone era. Who would ever have thought that department stores would be bygone? It makes me wish that I had been a city child with hucksters (and Hutzlers!) and street cars and family all around. Thank you for sharing this!

This post almost makes me look forward to winter! Almost, but not quite. I have learned to be skeptical of anything you read online…

Hi Robert–Don’t I have a great publicist? Thanks for your kind comments. I don’t know why I submitted that article to the paper–it just seemed like such an amazing confluence of connections that it took to get that tv up and running!

Marty commented on the post, Have you heard the (ugh) news? 4 years, 9 months ago
I braced myself for a diatribe about the news of the world, but this was a surprisingly uplifting post. “We have only our faith in ourselves, our ability to remain humane and courteous, our tenacity at remaining sane even in a social vacuum, and our commitment to accomplishment–if only to survive.” That is a great statement of the human spirit…[Read more]

I read To a Mouse–and did not remember the famous lines ‘the best laid plans of mice and men…’ were from that poem. I had to read it side by side with an English translation! Thank you for reminding me of that poem, and for your interest in seeing more of mine. I should use these long winter days to organize my papers!

Thanks or no thanks to the pandemic, this is becoming more relevant all the time. But the pandemic also complicates things because you can’t use the available space to bring people together. Our church fellowship hall has been repurposed as a classroom during the covid crisis, which might lead to creative thinking about other uses for that space…[Read more]

This is an excellent overview of what has contributed to the many problems that we have today. Not just the problem of angry mobs attacking the Capitol, but the more silent and insidious problems of jobs, housing, racial and class inequality, lack of universal health insurance, the cost of education–all the things that working people have…[Read more]

If you think it is hard to be an old man, try being an old woman! The culture is much less kind to old women, who also have to put up with the youthful fantasies of old men!

Love the metaphors, if not the message! Is it too late to pack the sandwiches? Why are we even talking about sailing in this stormy sea? Shouldn’t we be building a house upon a rock?
