The mariner is embarrassed to live in the same state as Steve King (R-4th) because Iowan people actually chose him as a Federal Representative. Already identified by analysis of his work as the worst […]

  • For those who have not been exposed to liberal arts and to those frightened away by the word ‘liberal,’ let the mariner assure the reader that liberal arts means the study of humanity and is neither liberal nor […]

  • Your observation is on target. In order to understand what a human is, we must acknowledge our place in a more powerful and conclusive universe.

  • It is wise to listen, not to me but to the Word, and to confess that all things are one.

Alas, Heraclitus was not a theist for he also said:

This Universe, which is the same for all, has not been made by any […]

    • We seem to seperate ourselves from the Universe. It is “out there” and we are “down here” when in reality there is no seperation. We exist as it, but have forgotten the fact that Earth and Humanity are not a different part of the Universe and what we see and experience daily is all part of the same thing. By communicating with each other and with our world in a loving way we are communicating with the Universe, but we have lost that awareness. Many refuse to try to communicate with one another and definitely not with Mother Earth and so they do not expect the unexpected because they think they are in control. We are in for a rude awakening when our blocks are suddenly taken away!

  • Remember those spooky science fiction shows when you watched the actor (and yourself) walk into a dense, mysterious cloud where something unimaginable will occur? Well, dear reader, we are at that moment in real […]

  • The mariner is not sure about the reader but the mariner has been tossed about on the deck of the 2016 election for President. Since the very beginning of the process, the voter hasn’t had much of a say. The R […]

    • This is a very clear analysis of what has happened in politics during my lifetime. It sounds like it is unbiased, if that is even possible. I like the line, “Reagan was just the toastmaster…” (at the fall of the Berlin wall). You could say he was the Toastmaster in Chief…!

  • The Midwest, between parallels N35° and N43°, has suffered temperatures in the high nineties with humidity above 70% for a good while. It isn’t pleasant. If you work outside, dehydration, sunburn and heat str […]

  • Through his retirement years, mariner has had more time to sit aside and watch the world go by. What has emerged is awareness that Homo sapiens will have a relatively short, finite time as a member of living […]

    • Oh, my–if we aren’t drowning in water, we are drowning in debt. What to do? What to do? Perhaps Chicken Little, Amos, and Guru could put their heads together and suggest a survival strategy for those of us who are not in a position to effect global change. Plant a garden? Buy gold? Go off the grid? Raise sheep in the backyard and learn to knit before the ice age cometh? A post with practical advice would be appreciated!

    • Where will the people go? They will all climb onto the part of the life raft that is still above water. We may need to build a wall at the Florida border.

  • The mariner has a working career that spans both corporate and government management. There is a distinct difference. Most notable is that corporate culture is measured solely by the ratio between cost and income, […]

  • Many readers may have heard the news media touting two pieces of news: first, Hillary’s staff implied Bernie was being considered as a possible Vice President; Bernie said he would be open to the Vice Presidency o […]

  • The odd reality of it all casts a strange light across the land. We fear a tornado of some kind during the general election. Donald has captured the spirit of the Republican white disenfranchised. Hillary already […]

  • Many have said the 2016 election is an unusual one that forebodes further unrest. For context, one must go back to points of recent unrest in 1964 (Civil Rights marches), 1968 (Chicago riots), 1970 (67 rounds […]
